Trailer Safety Checklist
Trailer checks before every trip

Check tyres by looking for cracks or bulges on the sidewalls, minimum tread depth, flat spots, uneven wear, and objects caught in the tread.

Ensure that tyres are inflated to the manufacturer's recommended level.

Check that your wheel nuts are properly fastened.

Ensure your spare wheel and spanner is in good condition and part of your trip

Check to ensure the tow coupling and brake mechanisms are well lubricated.

Coupling must be securely fastened and latched when the trailer is connected to the towing vehicle.

Safety chains must be properly connected with attachments capable of withstanding the specified breaking load of each chain.

Be sure the lights on your trailer work - Have another person stand behind the vehicle to check the brake lights and turn signals for proper operation.

Check that you have the correct reflector configuration. - 2 white reflectors facing forward, 2 x orange on the sides and either 5 x red square reflectors or 2 x red triangle reflectors on the rear of your trailer

Yellow reflective tape (SABS approved) must cover at least 80% of the side of the trailer and must be clearly visible so wipe or wash before use.

Rear number plate & number plate lamp visible / not obscured

Ensure all doors, hatches, covers and any load or equipment are properly secured.
Major trailer checks – every 5000km or after standing for more than 2 months

Jack the trailer up and spin the wheels, listening for rumbling noises which indicate worn wheel bearings. (Replace if worn)

Re-grease wheel bearings at least every 10 000kms

Remove tyres and hubs to check that brake pads are in good working condition

Check condition of brake cables and mechanism
-
Check suspension and frame for wear.
